Course Overview

This course is designed for participants who are 12-17 years-old looking to try a new activity, have some fun and engage with others whilst sailing.

Sailing

  • Launch and recover a boat

  • Correctly tack and gybe

  • Stop the boat

  • Successfully sail a reaching course

  • Sail upwind with instructor direction

  • Drive a powerboat with instructor assistance

  • Perform a capsize recovery

  • Participate in boat towing

  • Perform a man-overboard recovery

  • Learn how to use the appropriate safety equipment

  • Identify weather conditions and prepare accordingly

  • Learn to set up (rig) a boat

  • Identify the commonly used parts of the boat and their uses

  • Tie appropriate sailing knots

Sailing theory

  • Port/starboard

  • Windward/leeward

  • Right-of-way rules on the water

  • Buoyage and signage on the water

  • Learn and apply the points of sail

  • Understand the use of telltales

Meteorology and Tides

  • Identify wind direction

  • Source weather forecasts

  • Understand tides and current

Power boating

  • Learn the controls of a powerboat

  • Correctly use the controls of a powerboat

  • Perform basic boat driving manoeuvres

  • Perform a man-overboard manoeuvre

  • Understand the importance of a kill cord

  • Demonstrate safe boat handling practices

  • Understand water safety and navigation rules

Stand Up Paddle board

  • Identify the parts of a paddleboard, paddle, and safety gear

  • Perform basic balance techniques

  • Master forward strokes, turning strokes, and stopping techniques

  • Practice self-rescue techniques

Windsurfing

  • Learn the parts of the board, sail, and safety gear

  • Learn how to set up and pack up windsurfers correctly

  • Understand balance on the board and how to use the sail

  • Demonstrate how to turn the board using both sail and balance

  • Perform a tack using the correct technique

  • Perform a gybe using the correct technique

  • Demonstrate points of sail and correct sail positions for each
