OutThere Sailing Flinders 2024/25 Summer

Course Overview

This course is designed for participants who are 12-17 years-old looking to try a new activity, have some fun and engage with others whilst sailing.

Preparation

• Learn how to use the appropriate safety equipment

• Identify weather conditions and prepare accordingly

Boats and Equipment

• Learn to set up (rig) a boat and windsurfer

• Identify the commonly used parts of the boat

Ropework

• Learn to tie a figure of eight knot, reef knot and a bowline

Safety and Emergencies

• Perform a capsize recovery

• Participate in boat towing

• complete a 50m swim

Skills and Techniques

• Launch and recover a boat

• Correctly tack and stop the boat

• Successfully sail a reaching course

• Drive a power boat with instructor assistance

• Stand-up paddle board for 100m

Sailing theory

• Port/starboard

• Windward/leeward

• Right of way rules on the water

• Buoyage and signage on the water

Meteorology and Tides

• Identify wind direction

• Source weather forecasts
